Background

Ritual Dental is an early stage startup focused on making dental healthcare more accessible by redefining dental wellness and setting new standards of care in dentistry. The two co-founders Arman and Nihal had a vision to combine technology and innovation with deep dental expertise and quality care to boost their patients quality of life.

I worked collaboratively with the team to design both mobile and desktop aspects of the product that would help form the initial version of the product. This was an opportunity to take on a larger degree of ownership and define the early parts of the product while navigating ambiguity.

Process

The process for designing the different building blocks was cyclical and every aspect of building the product went through several rounds of iteration. Early iterations were more about getting ideas out and with feedback and proper analysis we could make adjustments in order to get the product to a concrete place.

Annotating images

Clinicians can see the images of the different results for their patients and target specific areas to annotate while in the annotation mode. This allowed them to directly target and keep track of their findings in one place.

Editing annotations

Saved annotations are highlighted with white circles. Tapping an annotation will target that specific comment where they can proceed to make edits by tapping the edit icon.

Comparing images

The comparison view only shows the set of images that are available to look at. Images being compared were designed to be limited to 2 images at a time and in a horizontal orientation to leverage available space and maintain clarity. With the set of images shown below, clinicians can drag and drop images in the containers to compare different images.

Gum health summary

When patients tap into the detailed view of their gum health results, they are presented with a page outlining the findings and overall condition of their oral health for this specific category.

Table for other bacteria

The first step towards building the table for other bacteria from the ground up was about ensuring the results are at the forefront and easy to understand. All possible bacteria are categorized as either found or not found and the degree of each bacteria is expressed with color and numbers without having to click into the menu.

We didn't observe any results for a few different reasons, most notably that this was the initial version of the product and a startup of this size didn't have access to numbers. As soon as we wrapped up designing and handing off the work to engineering, Ritual Dental opened their doors to the public.

Takeaways from the process

Be curious and get comfortable with the unknown

There was a lot ambiguity involved in the process and a lot of times there were feelings of not knowing what I was doing. I learned to embrace that feeling and began to understand that this was a normal emotion.

Be proactive and work collaboratively

This relates to the previous takeaway, but being able to ask clarifying questions early on and to have others involved to get different perspectives on approaching tasks was apparent.
